Hi everyone,
I have a construction job nearly sorted in Doha starting around March 2012. A few questions I had about Doha and Qatar in generally.
1. Is there rented accomadation where you can share with some Irish guys that are there already and what kind of prices would you pay.
2. My partner who's a secondary school teacher is thinking of coming over to teach after May, is there much hassle two people living together if were not married.
3. Is there much gaa going on throughout the year.
Thanks

Thanks Deirdre, I'd prefer a villa as I've got 2 dogs that need plenty space to roam about. Only for them I'd get an apartment. Bars aren't necessary but always nice to be close to! Cheers for your
help, I might do a quick day in the area (I currently live in Dubai) to suss it all out before we move.

Hi Matthew. Little knowledge of villa prices but I can say for certain that there are no bars. You'd have to travel to Doha, don't know the accommodation prices in Doha but you might want to consider
an apartment if you can afford it and travel to Al Khor for work as there is no social life in Al Khor.

Hi all,
I'm currently looking at moving to Doha, my housing budget is 8k but can stretch to 9k. I probably wouldn't be able to get a villa for this price so I was looking at al Khor area. the place I will be
working is in al khor. Any help on the al khor area would be great, prices for villas, are there bars in the hotels there like in doha?

I have a quick question;if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
My long-term partner/boyfriend is considering a job contract in Doha. I would very much like to travel with him and live in Doha as most of what i hear is very positive and he is keen.
I am aware that there may be problems regarding the fact that we are not married. Does anyone know if it is possible to overcome this issue?
Are there any of you guys or your friends in the same situation?
Any advice would be much appreciated,

Hi everyone here, what a great site and I find it very informative. I will be coming over to Doha to work hopefully in September and I was wondering what activities there are for well lets say a guy
shy of his teenage years (ha ha). My wife and family will not be coming out at this stage due to my sons attending college and my wife's work which is understandable. This is the first time in 18
years that I will be seperated from my family but my family can come to Doha to visit as my wife flies for an airline so that wont be too bad. What I was wondering is : is there any football clubs or
other sports to get involved in as back home I coached an under 17 team (that have just won a league) and would love to get involved in anyway possible in managing and coaching a soccer team. This
will be good for me and hopefully good for any club looking for a manager. All replies welcome and thanks for reading my post.

@Frank, the x-trail was from Al Sadd motors, just behind MegaMart at Ramada signal. Got them down from 2400. Mind you I've referred two other people, one got one at same price, but they didn't have
one for my other friend. But worth a try... Better than scooting around in a KIA!

Anne(Wednesday, 27 April 2011 09:58)
@Cait, the heat is a reality and it's heating up now, I was here for a month in 50 degrees and it is challenging. Like your a/c in the car starts to throw out heat when your stopped at traffic lights
because it can't cope! but in reality the weather from October to May is absolutely perfect. I suppose it's no worse than dealing with rain, grey skies at home. My kids went sailing in it and didn't
seem to give two hoots. It's best to stay in with a/c.
Regarding music, there isnt a lot of live music or concerts but it's getting better. You can go to the Qatar Philharmonic and nearly have thenplace to your self in a custom built facility!
enjoy..

By the way schools are a nightmare - a lot of the best ones are full and have very long waiting lists. They are also charging very high prices so make sure that fees are covered in your package.
Watch out for extra charges such as application fees, deposits and levies. Driving is dreadful so try to live close to work. On the plus side, compound living has been lovely with pool and lots of
new friends for the children. Doha feels safe and good for families.

Thanks a million for that Anne. It's in one of the Universities - more specialist / management role than teaching, and also linking in with other institutions in Doha. Sounds like it's a good place
for the kids, but how do you manage with the heat? We love the kind of events and festivals you've mentioned so I'm delighted to hear that there are those kind of things going on. My husband is a
musician so music is a must in our family!
#57
Anne(Monday, 11 April 2011 11:11)
@Cait. I'm not sure the demands that'll be put on you, are you accepting a teachers post? I've worked in Education City on one of their projects and the demands were no more than at home. Let me know
what kind of job and I might better be able to comment. To be honest nobody works too hard here as far as I can see. regarding the kids, I have three aged 8, 13 and 15, and to be sure they benefit
the most from being here. We chose a compound with lots of families so they spend a lot of time playing outside in gorgeous weather, or in the pool, or at parties. Lots of outdoor stuff. Its great
for families, in fact far better than it is for singletons. By definition Doha is boring so having stuff to do with the kids fills in lots of time. We find ourselves going to sailing, or the movies,
or shopping. There are a lot of festivals to go to like a music festival on the beach next week that all the family can go to, we've been to food festival, film festival you name it! As well as that
look up Doha Mums, this is an organized group that do lots of stuff for mothers, also there is an Irish play group for Irish kids... you won't be short of things to do.

Hi there. Just got back from a whistle stop visit to Doha where I was having an in-person interview for a post based in Education City. Just really wondering about work / life balance. I have two
kids - 6 and 3- and although I love the sound of the job I'm worried that I would have my head stuck in work 24 / 7. How does family life work out over in Doha? What's a typical sort of day? Would
really love any feedback.
Thanks so much.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE THINKING OF WORKING HERE*** be aware when you are offered a contract to clarify the following. Is it a permanent role? Then ask what their policy is on the NOC if you
wish leave the role and after how long would they provide it. You will need an NOC (letter of no objection from your employer) if you want to switch jobs, if they do not provide an NOC you are tied
to them and they control your entry and exit visa, you must leave the country and you will not be able to work in Qatar, Abu Dhabi or Dubai (Oman is the exception) for two years. The same applies for
contract roles, a friend of mine was in a contract role, told they were terminating him and he had to leave. This is on a need to know basis if you are coming to Qatar.

@LF the teaching salaries are about 15000ry a month, that's about euro 3k tax free. Your flight out and home once a year, medical, accommodation is included in your package. All you need cover is
clothes, entertainment and car. Driving is probably a must as public transport is not great. I'm hiring a Nissan xTrail which costs 2200k a month or about 440 euro. It costs about 9 euro to fill the
tank! So figure out how much you can save. I believe also that if you stay at the school for a while you get a bonus. Oh lastly, for every year you work you get three weeks pay when you leave by law.

@Mary O D... try International School of London Qatar for teaching positions, I'm not a teacher but my daughter goes there. I think they might be looking for teachers, at least they were at one point
and had the positions available on their website. Its not enough to email over here as they do not respond (ever! or rarely) so I would suggest calling... its the way things are done here.
. Someone mentioned Chouiefat, I know some teachers there and they say its pretty tough... bit like a production line, not much fun for kids and same for teachers
#40
Anne(Thursday, 27 January 2011 12:05)
@Eugene, you can't come here unless you have a job, and therefore a sponsor, in advance You are tied to that sponsor and some won't allow you to move to another employer. They also control your exit
and entry visa.
@Sean, cost of food is high because majority is imported. I shop at Carrefour the french chain, the quality of the food can be a bit dodgy also (vegetables terrible etc.) Eating out can be expensive
if you are in a hotel or on the Pearl (Where you can also drink) but tonight I had dinner with hubby and kids for 120ry or 25 euro (no booze but great food.) Try Clarendon Parker for medical jobs, or
Bayt. You could also try Qatar Foundation website (I think they may have medical jobs.) Best of luck.

Hi there. Considering a move to Qatar to teach (primary). Am fully qualified with 5 years experience. With regard to the package - it all looks impressive, flights, accomodation, tax free etc - my
question is this: How much could you conceivably save in a year?{single, male, like a few pints, nothing too expensive} Just trying to figure out if the move is a financially viable one.
Hi Michael, Welcome to Doha, Yes, you can get a pint in the Irish Bar in the Sheraton, you will need your passport with you. Monthly rental is anywhere from 9 - 16k, there are no good or bad areas,
the biggest consideration is the traffic, is is pretty bad so somewhere near work is best
#37
Michael Mc Grath.(Thursday, 20 January 2011 13:22)
Hi to all,
I have just accepted a job in Doha, starting on Sunday 13th February.
Is there anywhere to have a pint in Doha, and is it expensive?
Also, we would perfer to rent a house in a compound rather than a flat, whats the going rate for rent, and the best locations to live?
Sean, with regard to the cost of living, i personally think that groceries are slightly higher priced than Ireland, maybe this is because I buy mostly imported products. Eating out is the same, fast
food is cheap any brunches in hotels, or chains, e.g. Starbucks is expensive.

Mary(Tuesday, 14 December 2010 10:26)
To those of you contemplating teaching positions here in Qatar: Sharia law doesn't really bother you on a day to day basis. You should be aware of the restrictions that apply, however: dress code is
discreet so no strappy or sleeveless tops, contractually you will not be allowed to work in any other school here for two years after leaving the first one, so little opportunity to move between. An
overseas hire, as you would be, should have accomodation, flights, medical care, transport, schooling for any children, etc included in the package. Some schools request that there be no mention of
religion in classes. It's quite sad to see in many schools here right now there is hardly a sign of Christmas. Most international schools here have a high percentage of ESL students.
Outside of school, you are allowed to practice whatever religion but that too is tightly controlled: you must attend the 'approved' places of worship / churches only.
For teaching jobs look at TESCONNECT and search under Middle East. Also check out the Employment Fairs in Dubai and in the UK; much of the recruitment for schools here goes on there. Beware of
vigorous recruiting by Chouiefat Schools: they hire Irish graduates straight out of college as they don't require any teacher-training qualification. All the other international schools insist on a
PGCE or equivalent. You might be interested to know that you can study for your PGCE by distance learning here, through Sunderland and Nottingham Universities.
Check out the following international schools: Doha College, DESS, American School of Doha, Sherborne Qatar, Compass, International School of London, British Montessori School.
I hope this helps!

Hi John,
It is totally safe in Doha. In fact that is one of the great things about it. On days off...you will be able to drive anywhere and trips to the sea for camping overnight or just for the day is
popular. Your wife and child I am sure will get on great during your work week as there are plenty of women with children to meet with here. It is probably advisable to open a bank account here once
in the country but you will only be able to do this once your resident's permit is processed. Compound living is popular here, yes, but likewise there are expats who live in stand alone villas.
Compound living offers more social life for yourselves and kids ....they usually have good amenities like a communal pool, gym, tennis courts, playground etc so there is lots to do for
families.
Best of luck with the move!

Hi, Im planning on moving to Doha in the next month or so. Im married with a 14 month old daughter. We are all planning on moving out,but perhaps just me for the first month or two.
I've worked in ireland my whole life, and this is the first "big" move away. I work in construction , so we all know how bad it is in ireland at the moment. I'm not worried about myself moving, as
ill be working 72hours/week, but how would life be for my wife and child. Are there many young irish families out there like us?I heard it's best to live in a compounded villa, if possible?? What
about bank accounts, do you need to set up one out there, or get the money lodged into your irish account?
What about being able to drive to other places around Doha on days off, is that advisable/safe, etc. Is it safe, and what area in city is nice to live near irish families etc?
Any advise from fellow irish would be really appreciated to help ease our minds before we move.

Lorraine,
If you're into cooking, pick up some real Vanilla Escence at home. You can buy almost anything here, but pricey!

Hi Lorraine, I've been here since April, so far I haven't been able to get E45 or scooters for Kids, ages 9 & 11, I'm back in Ireland now, so I'm bringing the scooters back, handy for the kids,
when you want to walk the corniche. I'd stock on Dunnes and Pennys cheapy clothes aswell, especially if you have childres, there is great shopping in Doha, but nothing as cheap.

Hi all,
My husband and I are moving to Qatar in October. Just wondering if you have any advice on things we should think of bringing with us from home that you either can't get in Qatar or is just too
expensive...
Thanks a mill :)

Hi John,
I'm here about 3 months too but have been overseas for 2.5 years. In that time I've used VHI Global cover, can't really comment on it as, thankfully, I haven't needed it in the time I've been away.
The Global Policy allows covers travel insurance so might be worth checking out expecially if you're already a VHI member.
Best wishes,
Aidin.

I am using "Allianz world cover" as provided by my company.
Excellent cover levels and you deal with the call center in dublin.
I have had claims dealt with by email using scanned receipts and all was reimbursed inside 2 weeks.
very impressed so far.

Cheers for your help, I might do a quick day in the area (I currently live in Dubai) to suss it all out before we move.
Deirdre Youell (Sunday, 23 October 2011 08:00)
Hi Matthew. Little knowledge of villa prices but I can say for certain that there are no bars. You'd have to travel to Doha, don't know the accommodation prices in Doha but you might want to consider an apartment if you can afford it and travel to Al Khor for work as there is no social life in Al Khor.
Matthew (Sunday, 23 October 2011 06:38)
Hi all,
I'm currently looking at moving to Doha, my housing budget is 8k but can stretch to 9k. I probably wouldn't be able to get a villa for this price so I was looking at al Khor area. the place I will be working is in al khor. Any help on the al khor area would be great, prices for villas, are there bars in the hotels there like in doha?
Thanks.

Hi anthony things are not as bad as they say, I lived in Saudi before my move to doha, there you would have a problem! But in comparison this place is not too bad. Maybe a bit more than you're used to back home but nothing to be overly concerned about. fYI It's handy to get an international license before you come out here. One thing i will say is to bring a box of barry's tea!! Best of luck on the move

@andrew. We are same, had company accommodation and moved to compound. No hassle at all, very safe. Think mostly safe here for women, worse thing is you get stared at, and blonde women get more hassle. You won't look back.

Hi myself and my partner have been living here since september. We are currenty living in company supplied accommodation, so no bills really. We have been thinking of moving out from under the schools wing and getting our own place which the school will give us an allowance. Could anyone suggest any cons or pros they have encountered doing this. Our area seems to be pretty unsafe for females. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi everyone here, what a great site and I find it very informative. I will be coming over to Doha to work hopefully in September and I was wondering what activities there are for well lets say a guy shy of his teenage years (ha ha). My wife and family will not be coming out at this stage due to my sons attending college and my wife's work which is understandable. This is the first time in 18 years that I will be seperated from my family but my family can come to Doha to visit as my wife flies for an airline so that wont be too bad. What I was wondering is : is there any football clubs or other sports to get involved in as back home I coached an under 17 team (that have just won a league) and would love to get involved in anyway possible in managing and coaching a soccer team. This will be good for me and hopefully good for any club looking for a manager. All replies welcome and thanks for reading my post.

Hi - just wondering if anyone can recommend a shipping company to move around 80 - 100kg from Ireland out to Doha????
Anne (Wednesday, 27 April 2011 10:01)
@Frank, the x-trail was from Al Sadd motors, just behind MegaMart at Ramada signal. Got them down from 2400. Mind you I've referred two other people, one got one at same price, but they didn't have one for my other friend. But worth a try... Better than scooting around in a KIA!
Anne (Wednesday, 27 April 2011 09:58)
@Cait, the heat is a reality and it's heating up now, I was here for a month in 50 degrees and it is challenging. Like your a/c in the car starts to throw out heat when your stopped at traffic lights because it can't cope! but in reality the weather from October to May is absolutely perfect. I suppose it's no worse than dealing with rain, grey skies at home. My kids went sailing in it and didn't seem to give two hoots. It's best to stay in with a/c.
Regarding music, there isnt a lot of live music or concerts but it's getting better. You can go to the Qatar Philharmonic and nearly have thenplace to your self in a custom built facility! enjoy..
Frank (Friday, 22 April 2011 10:05)
By the way schools are a nightmare - a lot of the best ones are full and have very long waiting lists. They are also charging very high prices so make sure that fees are covered in your package. Watch out for extra charges such as application fees, deposits and levies. Driving is dreadful so try to live close to work. On the plus side, compound living has been lovely with pool and lots of new friends for the children. Doha feels safe and good for families.
Frank (Friday, 22 April 2011 09:54)
Hi Anne
Ref #52 I was wondering if you could let me know where you hire your X-Trail from? That sounds like a very good deal.
Cait (Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:03)
Thanks a million for that Anne. It's in one of the Universities - more specialist / management role than teaching, and also linking in with other institutions in Doha. Sounds like it's a good place for the kids, but how do you manage with the heat? We love the kind of events and festivals you've mentioned so I'm delighted to hear that there are those kind of things going on. My husband is a musician so music is a must in our family!
Anne (Monday, 11 April 2011 11:11)
@Cait. I'm not sure the demands that'll be put on you, are you accepting a teachers post? I've worked in Education City on one of their projects and the demands were no more than at home. Let me know what kind of job and I might better be able to comment. To be honest nobody works too hard here as far as I can see. regarding the kids, I have three aged 8, 13 and 15, and to be sure they benefit the most from being here. We chose a compound with lots of families so they spend a lot of time playing outside in gorgeous weather, or in the pool, or at parties. Lots of outdoor stuff. Its great for families, in fact far better than it is for singletons. By definition Doha is boring so having stuff to do with the kids fills in lots of time. We find ourselves going to sailing, or the movies, or shopping. There are a lot of festivals to go to like a music festival on the beach next week that all the family can go to, we've been to food festival, film festival you name it! As well as that look up Doha Mums, this is an organized group that do lots of stuff for mothers, also there is an Irish play group for Irish kids... you won't be short of things to do.
Cait (Thursday, 07 April 2011 14:35)
Hi there. Just got back from a whistle stop visit to Doha where I was having an in-person interview for a post based in Education City. Just really wondering about work / life balance. I have two kids - 6 and 3- and although I love the sound of the job I'm worried that I would have my head stuck in work 24 / 7. How does family life work out over in Doha? What's a typical sort of day? Would really love any feedback.
Thanks so much.

Anne (Tuesday, 22 March 2011 12:48)
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE THINKING OF WORKING HERE*** be aware when you are offered a contract to clarify the following. Is it a permanent role? Then ask what their policy is on the NOC if you wish leave the role and after how long would they provide it. You will need an NOC (letter of no objection from your employer) if you want to switch jobs, if they do not provide an NOC you are tied to them and they control your entry and exit visa, you must leave the country and you will not be able to work in Qatar, Abu Dhabi or Dubai (Oman is the exception) for two years. The same applies for contract roles, a friend of mine was in a contract role, told they were terminating him and he had to leave. This is on a need to know basis if you are coming to Qatar.
Anne (Tuesday, 22 March 2011 12:34)
@LF the teaching salaries are about 15000ry a month, that's about euro 3k tax free. Your flight out and home once a year, medical, accommodation is included in your package. All you need cover is clothes, entertainment and car. Driving is probably a must as public transport is not great. I'm hiring a Nissan xTrail which costs 2200k a month or about 440 euro. It costs about 9 euro to fill the tank! So figure out how much you can save. I believe also that if you stay at the school for a while you get a bonus. Oh lastly, for every year you work you get three weeks pay when you leave by law.
