    Hi everyone,

I have a construction job nearly sorted in Doha starting around March 2012. A few questions I had about Doha and Qatar in generally.
    1. Is there rented accomadation where you can share with some Irish guys that are there already and what kind of prices would you pay.
    2. My partner who's a secondary school teacher is thinking of coming over to teach after May, is there much hassle two people living together if were not married.
    3. Is there much gaa going on throughout the year.

    Thanks

Thanks Deirdre, I'd prefer a villa as I've got 2 dogs that need plenty space to roam about. Only for them I'd get an apartment. Bars aren't necessary but always nice to be close to! Cheers for your help, I might do a quick day in the area (I currently live in Dubai) to suss it all out before we move.

    Deirdre Youell (Sunday, 23 October 2011 08:00)

Hi Matthew. Little knowledge of villa prices but I can say for certain that there are no bars. You'd have to travel to Doha, don't know the accommodation prices in Doha but you might want to consider an apartment if you can afford it and travel to Al Khor for work as there is no social life in Al Khor.

    Matthew (Sunday, 23 October 2011 06:38)

    Hi all,

I'm currently looking at moving to Doha, my housing budget is 8k but can stretch to 9k. I probably wouldn't be able to get a villa for this price so I was looking at al Khor area. the place I will be working is in al khor. Any help on the al khor area would be great, prices for villas, are there bars in the hotels there like in doha?

    Thanks.

Hi anthony things are not as bad as they say, I lived in Saudi before my move to doha, there you would have a problem! But in comparison this place is not too bad. Maybe a bit more than you're used to back home but nothing to be overly concerned about. fYI It's handy to get an international license before you come out here. One thing i will say is to bring a box of barry's tea!! Best of luck on the move

@andrew. We are same, had company accommodation and moved to compound. No hassle at all, very safe. Think mostly safe here for women, worse thing is you get stared at, and blonde women get more hassle. You won't look back.

Hi myself and my partner have been living here since september. We are currenty living in company supplied accommodation, so no bills really. We have been thinking of moving out from under the schools wing and getting our own place which the school will give us an allowance. Could anyone suggest any cons or pros they have encountered doing this. Our area seems to be pretty unsafe for females. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Adrian (Wednesday, 08 June 2011 09:56)

Hi everyone here, what a great site and I find it very informative. I will be coming over to Doha to work hopefully in September and I was wondering what activities there are for well lets say a guy shy of his teenage years (ha ha). My wife and family will not be coming out at this stage due to my sons attending college and my wife's work which is understandable. This is the first time in 18 years that I will be seperated from my family but my family can come to Doha to visit as my wife flies for an airline so that wont be too bad. What I was wondering is : is there any football clubs or other sports to get involved in as back home I coached an under 17 team (that have just won a league) and would love to get involved in anyway possible in managing and coaching a soccer team. This will be good for me and hopefully good for any club looking for a manager. All replies welcome and thanks for reading my post.

Hi - just wondering if anyone can recommend a shipping company to move around 80 - 100kg from Ireland out to Doha????

  • #62

    Anne (Wednesday, 27 April 2011 10:01)

@Frank, the x-trail was from Al Sadd motors, just behind MegaMart at Ramada signal. Got them down from 2400. Mind you I've referred two other people, one got one at same price, but they didn't have one for my other friend. But worth a try... Better than scooting around in a KIA!

    Anne (Wednesday, 27 April 2011 09:58)

@Cait, the heat is a reality and it's heating up now, I was here for a month in 50 degrees and it is challenging. Like your a/c in the car starts to throw out heat when your stopped at traffic lights because it can't cope! but in reality the weather from October to May is absolutely perfect. I suppose it's no worse than dealing with rain, grey skies at home. My kids went sailing in it and didn't seem to give two hoots. It's best to stay in with a/c.

Regarding music, there isnt a lot of live music or concerts but it's getting better. You can go to the Qatar Philharmonic and nearly have thenplace to your self in a custom built facility! enjoy..

    Frank (Friday, 22 April 2011 10:05)

By the way schools are a nightmare - a lot of the best ones are full and have very long waiting lists. They are also charging very high prices so make sure that fees are covered in your package. Watch out for extra charges such as application fees, deposits and levies. Driving is dreadful so try to live close to work. On the plus side, compound living has been lovely with pool and lots of new friends for the children. Doha feels safe and good for families.

    Frank (Friday, 22 April 2011 09:54)

    Hi Anne
Ref #52 I was wondering if you could let me know where you hire your X-Trail from? That sounds like a very good deal.

  • #58

    Cait (Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:03)

Thanks a million for that Anne. It's in one of the Universities - more specialist / management role than teaching, and also linking in with other institutions in Doha. Sounds like it's a good place for the kids, but how do you manage with the heat? We love the kind of events and festivals you've mentioned so I'm delighted to hear that there are those kind of things going on. My husband is a musician so music is a must in our family!

  • #57

    Anne (Monday, 11 April 2011 11:11)

@Cait. I'm not sure the demands that'll be put on you, are you accepting a teachers post? I've worked in Education City on one of their projects and the demands were no more than at home. Let me know what kind of job and I might better be able to comment. To be honest nobody works too hard here as far as I can see. regarding the kids, I have three aged 8, 13 and 15, and to be sure they benefit the most from being here. We chose a compound with lots of families so they spend a lot of time playing outside in gorgeous weather, or in the pool, or at parties. Lots of outdoor stuff. Its great for families, in fact far better than it is for singletons. By definition Doha is boring so having stuff to do with the kids fills in lots of time. We find ourselves going to sailing, or the movies, or shopping. There are a lot of festivals to go to like a music festival on the beach next week that all the family can go to, we've been to food festival, film festival you name it! As well as that look up Doha Mums, this is an organized group that do lots of stuff for mothers, also there is an Irish play group for Irish kids... you won't be short of things to do.

    Cait (Thursday, 07 April 2011 14:35)

Hi there. Just got back from a whistle stop visit to Doha where I was having an in-person interview for a post based in Education City. Just really wondering about work / life balance. I have two kids - 6 and 3- and although I love the sound of the job I'm worried that I would have my head stuck in work 24 / 7. How does family life work out over in Doha? What's a typical sort of day? Would really love any feedback.
    Thanks so much.

    Anne (Tuesday, 22 March 2011 12:48)

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PEOPLE THINKING OF WORKING HERE*** be aware when you are offered a contract to clarify the following. Is it a permanent role? Then ask what their policy is on the NOC if you wish leave the role and after how long would they provide it. You will need an NOC (letter of no objection from your employer) if you want to switch jobs, if they do not provide an NOC you are tied to them and they control your entry and exit visa, you must leave the country and you will not be able to work in Qatar, Abu Dhabi or Dubai (Oman is the exception) for two years. The same applies for contract roles, a friend of mine was in a contract role, told they were terminating him and he had to leave. This is on a need to know basis if you are coming to Qatar.

    Anne (Tuesday, 22 March 2011 12:34)

@LF the teaching salaries are about 15000ry a month, that's about euro 3k tax free. Your flight out and home once a year, medical, accommodation is included in your package. All you need cover is clothes, entertainment and car. Driving is probably a must as public transport is not great. I'm hiring a Nissan xTrail which costs 2200k a month or about 440 euro. It costs about 9 euro to fill the tank! So figure out how much you can save. I believe also that if you stay at the school for a while you get a bonus. Oh lastly, for every year you work you get three weeks pay when you leave by law.

We are considering moving to Qatar. Our greatest concern is our son who is autistic. Does anyone have any information on ASD Schools in Qatar. Are they any good? What are the costs? How easy is it to get your child in? etc.

    Hi All,

I'm 23, from Dublin and a graduate student of Theoretical Physics at Trinity, College Dublin (I studied 1 year in Moscow). I have just come from Alexandria (learning Arabic) and I'm in Doha now and will stay for at least 1 year.

I'm interested in LNG and oil pumping/refining and in the carbon storage programmes. I would also be interested in working on site alongside engineers/ teaching Maths, Physics or English.

I speak German, Russian and French fluently and have started learning Arabic. Does anyone have any ideas for job opportunities here in Qatar? I'd be happy to send on my CV.

    All the best,
    John
