Thanks Anne/Oscar, we found a new furnished villa compound in Al Salam St. not far from Leewan Gardens (looking at map), Aspire and Villagio and hopefully should only be 20 mins or so to school. Also have two starting in Sherborne Anne - hopefully will have an opportunity to meet!

@Helen, we are in Leewan Gardens, with two in school in Sherborne. What's your budget, that will dictate a lot. There is a lot of accommodation available. Are you taking your own furniture or looking for furnished?

    Hello Helen,
Al Waab is very central as is Al Soudan. Only takes about 20 minutes to Sherborne.
Rayyan is the closest area to Sherborne but it is quite far from shopping malls, gym, etc (Also, few expats live in Rayyan).
    Best wishes

Hi there, we are another Irish family on our way to Doha in late Aug/Sept and our children have places in Sherborne School. Could anyone suggest areas or compounds that would be good to do the daily school run from? Would appreciate any help!!

Hi myself and my partner have been living here since september. We are currenty living in company supplied accommodation, so no bills really. We have been thinking of moving out from under the schools wing and getting our own place which the school will give us an allowance. Could anyone suggest any cons or pros they have encountered doing this. Our area seems to be pretty unsafe for females. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Hi All

I have just moved to Doha and I am looking for accomodation. Preferably a room in a villa or apartment as I am trying to keep the cost to about 2,000QR per month. I will be commuting from Dubai so I only need a bed to sleep in during the week. If anyone has a spare room to rent or knows of anyone renting a room, please let me know. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Please contact me at davidesmith1@gmail.com or call/text +97433036936

    Thanks
    David

Hi Paul, It is illegal to cohabit in Qatar. If caught, your and/or your partner will be deported. Any of the wives currently here are sponsored by their husbands, as she will not be sponsored by you, the only way around it would be for your partner to get a job and get a company to sponsor her before coming here. Then she would have her own accomodation and then you could live together but appear separate on paper. If she is not qualified to secure her own job, she could come here on a holiday visa, and do visa runs, ( leave the country every 2 months to get her passport stamped) and live with you but she would not obtain Residents Permit. You run the risk of being reported, apart from being a Muslim country you do get some narrow minded individuals from other nationalities. Also without being married and legitimately in the country, it would be risky if she were to get sick or pregnant! email me if you want more info at info@irishinqatar.com

    Hi,

It seems difficult to get accurate info on Qatar. A lot of people saying different things about the same qusetion on other sites. Hence I hope ye can help.
I'm looking to move to Doha in 2011 but I am a bit worried about the law with regard to cohabiting (i.e. unmarried) couples. Is this a no-no? It would be dealbreaker for us so I would like some accurate advice on this please.

James, Prices are plummeting due to over-supply so good news on that front. Anne-Maries suggestion is good regarding schools. If I was you I'd start looking for schools now, that's the real nightmare. I'm still in Ireland call me at 087 283 2823 I can give you heads up. Our villa is 12,000 riyal, which is about euro2,400 or so, there are a bunch of them available and really nice. Depends on where you work etc. Best to call me. Regards, Anne

I would recommend you looking for a house near your children's school. Some families have to resort to taxis/buses because the traffic can be bad if you go any distance.

For a nice 3/4 bedroom villa on a compound with good facilities look at approx 16000-18000QR.
