    Hi everyone,

I'm a 24 year old Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) considering moving to Qatar. I'm interested in working in a hospital/clinical setting. I would also like to teach Irish Dancing in Qatar.
I have been told that agencies tend to mess you about a bit so was wondering if anyone could advise me on hospitals that have SLT departments (sometimes also referred to as otolaryngologists or speech pathologists). I cannot seem to find much info on Qatar medical infrastructure online or on specific hospital websites.
Any contact details of any Irish SLT's in Qatar or SLT departments in Qatar would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a million Qatar paddy's!
    Ciara

    Hi Joanne,
The schools in Qatar for expats are all private, and fee paying, most have entrance tests and do not cater for special needs. I left Ireland 18 months ago and had been working in an Early Intervetion School for children on the spectrum. I am not aware of any school here that really caters for the needs of such children unless they are high functioning. The Shafallah Centre teaches in Arabic. The Learning Centre is American based. Any European families I know of who have had a child diagnosed here usually end up with the Mum and child returning home.

Carmela, it's a difficult one, see earlier posts but if you are not married both of you will need to get a job. construction labourer jobs not a runner as they import cheap labour from India and elsewhere and pay them little (@Gervase I dont think Qatar is a runner for you for the same reason.) I know that the Abu Dhabi government are going to Ireland soon to hire teachers specifically, if you post your email here I will forward you information. I need more info on your boyfriends job to know what to say, is he an engineer or QS for instance. My husband is a QS here and we were hired through an agent, I think that is the best route, try Gulf Connexions, Clarendon Parker and Bayt, but you have to be aggressive and phone, email does not work here, you have to hustle.

    Hi all,

I am writing on behalf of my brother and his friend, both of whom are from Armagh and are tilers. Like Carmela above, they are considering a move to Qatar for work. Could anyone help in terms of pointing me in the right direction of where they could start to look for work. Qatar came on their radar as they thought with the World Cup, there may be construction work beginning now. Any help appreciated. I can be reached at gervase9@hotmail.co.uk. Thanks and regards Gervase

    Hi,
Myself and my boyfriend are considering leaving Ireland and moving to Qatar in search of employment and a change of lifestyle for a few years. I have a BA Applied Social Studies and also am a qualified Montessori Teacher. My boyfriend has experience in Construction, like so many Irish guys!
Can somebody please give us a starting place on how to look for employment through trusted sites and also if there is the possibility of me gaining employment in my qualified areas.
I would appreciate any help, tips or advice
    Thanks so much :)

John, best to look up the companies you want to work with directly. I find the agencies hopeless. For instance Qatar Petroleum has a web career section and you can apply there. I hate to say though that most don't reply and it is very important to make the effort to try and talk to HR live i.e. hassle them. Also a lot of people physically bring their CV to preferred organisations. Equally you'll need to network, see if there are any groups in LinkedIn that might get you known some people in. How did you get here to Doha without a job? Normally you need to have a sponsor to get a visa?

    Hi All,

I'm 23, from Dublin and a graduate student of Theoretical Physics at Trinity, College Dublin (I studied 1 year in Moscow). I have just come from Alexandria (learning Arabic) and I'm in Doha now and will stay for at least 1 year.

I'm interested in LNG and oil pumping/refining and in the carbon storage programmes. I would also be interested in working on site alongside engineers/ teaching Maths, Physics or English.

I speak German, Russian and French fluently and have started learning Arabic. Does anyone have any ideas for job opportunities here in Qatar? I've applied with Reed. I'd be happy to send on my CV. Email: lyons.john26@yahoo.com

    All the best,
    John

    Hi Folks,

Great to see a website like this up and running. I was just looking for a bit of advice, I've just been offered a job in Doha, with salary, accommodation etc., I was told that its the norm to try and negotiate a higher salary before agreeing to anything. Does anyone know if this is the case?

    Hi,

I am a 33 year old single female who is in the final discussion stages with a Management Consulting firm for a great role in Qatar. Reading through the website here though, I am getting a little worried. The place sounds very family-oriented - clearly am not worried about that in itself, rather am wondering if any of you would have an insight into what the scene is like for singletons?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Just a quick Hello, starting work in mid June in Doha as a Civil Engineering Construction Manager. Ive been working in Ireland for the past 16 years as a Civil Engineer. Heading over by myself initially and wife and 2 kids, (2 and 3 and a half), to follow in a month or 2. Just when it gets really hot I guess. Was over in Doha for an interview and was impressed. No crime, great weather 75% of the year and a good place for families. Not a great place if your a single I'd say. Construction is really busy over there so a good place for 180,000 unemployed irish construction workers, lol.

Socially I think there are a few places to have a drink, at 8 euro a pint none the less. Irish bar in the Sheraton Hotel if your up for a taste of home, they even have the prices set really high so you actually think you're in Temple Bar. Nice touch. Actually the prices here make Temple Bar look like Aldi.

Anyways Qatar should be considered for construction, both Building and Civil are very busy. I'll try and be more informative after I've made the move.

Congrats on the website, great to see it and I'm sure it will be a hit.

    Hi Dermot,

We made the move from Ireland in February this year. My husband is a Project Manager in Construction and he made the move late last year, couple of months before our arrival. We are still adjusting but starting to settle in now. The culture is very different but you can have a nice lifestyle here in Qatar and it is nice way of life if you have children. At present it is very hot and the summer months are tough purely with weather/heat but rest of the year is very bearable and pleasant. Compared to Ireland where it is impossible to save in my opinion and not much to do for families socially, I think Qatar comes out better. Most expats live on compounds that are well equipped, usually with a pool, gym, games room etc so there is a lot more to do close to home. My husband is home from work earlier than he would have been back in Ireland. So in general there is a better home/work balance which is good for the family. If you have any further questions, just let me know.

hi i have been considering a move to Qatar for sometime now and i would like to hear from irish who have made the switch? I.E. work lifestyle etc. I have been a project/site manager for fourteen years in ireland and due to its decline it has become very difficult here to say the least. Any advice would be great thanks.
